Think about a time when you may have said to someone "just tell me the truth" or "if I only knew the truth". What outcome did that truth lead to?
I recently asked someone to take advantage of a spontaneous truth-telling opportunity during the next week. Quite unsuspectingly, the woman entered into intimate sharing with her long-term spouse.
Since truth invites truth, it came as no surprise that her sharing invited his journey into truth as well. Both shared things they did not like and had not been happy with in the relationship. This truth-telling opportunity resulted in a decision to end their marriage.
What is the truth about truth? Truth may come as a silent whisper or as a giant roar. Truth may tread lightly and give you time to assimilate its impact. On the other hand, telling yourself your truth can cause an instant implosion in your world!
Let's consider what it means when truth rips through your life like an unforgiving tornado. Recall your own experience of this; when you realize that you need to find a different job, end a relationship, get help for an addiction or deal with a life-threatening health issue.
Truth tears down the security of illusion as it presents "what is". Truth in this case, is calling for integrity to be restored. It brings us into the present because the only power to change is in the present.
One may ask, why bother to tell the truth if telling the truth can be so painful and disruptive? Why not continue to ignore the internal promptings and let life merrily roll along? In fact, life can not merrily roll along if there is an untold truth to tell. The call to wholeness is inherent in the persistent inklings. Our desire for wholeness is ultimately greater than our resistance to what it will require of us. More often than not, we know the truth we need to tell and what that demands of us.
Consider what next truth you need to tell yourself. Tell yourself that truth. Ask for the courage to bring your life into integrity around that truth knowing that your prayer will be answered.
