Psychometry literally means "soul measuring." It is the ability to read part or all of an object's history or the history of those people who may have handled it. While it deals most often with the past, it may often reflect present states as well.

There is, occasionally, disagreement among individuals who practice psychometry as to whether it can be used to read or reflect the future. This depends entirely on one's perspective. The object will not hold impressions of the future, as they will not have occurred yet. On the other hand, someone who is capable of seeing the pattern of the past in the life of the individual through the object can usually make very viable predictions based on that data. This is because most people never change their patterns.

There are three kinds of psychometry, all of which will be explored to some extent in this book. They overlap often, as there are not always clearly defined borders. They are:

Object Psychometry

Object Psychometry is probably the most common, and the form most people are familiar with. Every object has its own energy and is often imprinted by the owner of that object in a unique manner. How this occurs is part of what we will explore in this chapter.

In this form of psychometry, you learn to establish a rapport with the object and the energies imprinted upon it. Most often, the touching of objects to read their imprints occurs in one of three ways:

  • Held in the hands.
  • Placed against the forehead and/or face.
  • Placed against the solar plexus.

These are points on the body where our chakra centers are most active for sensory impression through psychometry. Chakras are points in the body where there is a higher degree of energy activity They control all energy going into and emanating from the body. The seven major chakras are points of greater electromagnetic activity in and around the body. Two of these are the points of the brow and the solar plexus. The hands are also points of great energy activity.

By holding the object in the hands or placing the object against the forehead or face, impressions are received about the owner of the object or events surrounding the object's history. "This is based on the theory that emotional events create a thin film that coats all objects, including people, in the immediate vicinity of the occurrence. This coating of objects or people is permanent. A psychometrist coming in contact with such objects or individuals will be able to read the coating substance and thus will be able to reconstruct the emotional event."

There is a growing interest in the metaphysical field in using psychometry in detective work. Objects are connecting links to the owner, or owners, and the important events associated with them. They are also links to events and situations associated with places important and significant to the owner(s).

This has application in many areas. Two of the most common are archaeology and criminal investigations. In archaeological psychometry, the individual reads, or attunes to, a historical object or site and is impressed with the history of events and people surrounding it. This can provide further information and insight into historical periods.

In criminal investigations, it has application in a variety of ways. Location of lost or stolen items, murder, and missing people are just a few areas. My personal experience has centered mostly around missing and abused children. A connecting link to the individual is required. Clothing, picture, jewelry, hair sample, etc. is used to establish rapport or alignment with the individual or events critical in the life of the individual.

The difficulty in this application of psychometry lies in proper discrimination. Psychic information is just that-psychic. It is not always verifiable. Accusations and proclamations must be couched with great care, as it is easy to destroy the lives of innocent individuals with inappropriate or unfounded accusations.

Location Psychometry

Location psychometry relates strongly to deja vu, or "I've been here before," kinds of feelings. By learning to relax, the individual is able to attune to the energy of the environment and what has been imprinted upon it.

This relates to forms of dowsing and divining, such as in attuning to an ore sample to determine the feasibility of mining. This technique can also be helpful in locating water sources, ores, and minerals. Although in some areas of the country it is still called "water witching," it is simply an extension of psychometry.

Events, particularly those that are strongly emotional, leave traces. They imprint the location where they occur. These imprints can be read. Most people have had experiences where they have felt uncomfortable in some room or home. We have all walked into a room after someone has had a heated argument and were able to tell that something had gone on, even if we didn't know the details. If you have ever noticed the difference in the way your bedroom felt from your children's or your parents' while growing up, you have experienced how different people imprint an environment with unique energies.

Person Psychometry

Person psychometry has to do with the individual energy of the person. Just as we each have our own unique set of fingerprints, we each have our unique energy field. Person psychometry is used by everyone. How often are we able to assess the mood of someone without speaking to them? When we meet someone for the first time, are we instantly attracted or repelled? We may not know why these impressions occur, but they often register quite strongly.

The ability to attune to and assess where an individual is at is part of what can be developed with this form. This can be used in healing work from a variety of perspectives. It can be developed into a form of X-ray clairvoyance. It can be used to develop empathic healing techniques, some of which will be discussed in Chapter Six. It can be used to locate weaknesses and strengths in the body and the energy field surrounding it. (Keep in mind, though, that only a trained physician has the legal right to diagnose illness and disease.)

The imprint of objects and locations can be purposeful or accidental. An example of purposeful imprint with objects and places can be seen in the

creation of talismans and charms charged with a particular energy to affect a particular result. Churches, temples, and meditation rooms are places where efforts are made to create an atmosphere of reverence and peace. Simply by entering the space, you feel more relaxed. They facilitate the achievement of altered states and such.

Accidental imprints are much more common. An object held in your possession for long periods of time becomes magnetized or imprinted with your energy. It happens automatically. Many church holy relics were simply imprinted by the various saints and holy ones accidentally, not through any purposeful design. They became charged with the energy of the individual by simply having been a part of the individuals life. In the same way our favorite pieces of jewelry become more strongly imprinted.

The rooms we spend the most time in carry the strongest imprints. Someone walking through your house for the first time should have little trouble in determining which room or rooms you spend little time in.

Places and objects where intensely emotional events occur are more strongly imprinted. Many haunted homes are not truly haunted by ghosts, but by the imprints of events of the previous residents. The "spirit," the imprints, of the previous residents haunt the home. This is why some homes have a wonderful warm feeling about them, and others may not.

It is also why it takes a while for you to feel comfortable when you first move into a new home. Your furnishings and your presence must override the previous imprints. When your spirit begins to fill the place, it begins to truly feel like home. You imprint the space and the objects within it with your own emotional energies.
