Laying the Groundwork for Lucid Dreaming
The most important prerequisite for lucid dreaming appears to be a well-disciplined mind and an ability to hold a focus. People who have never learned to concentrate have less chance of recognizing and maintaining lucidity. They also tend to have fuzzy dreams. Those with moderate self-discipline may have lucid moments but can seldom retain them. It is the well-disciplined mind which seems to have the greatest frequency of clear, lucid dreams; and it is these people who can freely walk through God's door into other dimensions.
Charles Leadbeater, in his book Dreams, declares, "If a man wishes to reap in his waking consciousness the benefit of what his ego may learn during sleep, it is absolutely necessary for him to acquire control over his thoughts, to subdue all lower passions, and to attune his mind to higher things." The regular practice of meditation, yoga, body workouts, or other skills which require mental discipline are highly recommended as a basic, general rule for any kind of spiritual progress. Working with dreams and applying their messages is another type of mental training.
