Hailed as the "Fountain of Youth" and available at your local pharmacy, DHEA is a natural sterone produced by the adrenal gland--the most common sterone in the blood stream, in fact. DHEA levels decrease with age, and some studies have shown a correlation between low DHEA levels and weak immunity systems. This would explain why DHEA is being used in experiments to fight both HIV and cancer, as well as senility and

Alzheimer’s. DHEA has also been shown to extend the lifespan of lab rats. I take DHEA on a daily basis, but am unaware of any overt mental changes. Perhaps the effects are subtle, as DHEA is supposed to slowly become more effective over time. In the end, I’m betting on the longevity angle, and would rather err on the side of hope than let my skepticism lead me to what might be an otherwise early grave. The bookstores and the internet are awash with DHEA data with which you can make your own informed decision.

THE DOWNSIDE: Although DHEA has no apparent side effects, the trouble with DHEA is determining a dosage level, which can vary depending on age and/or health. Again, consulting one’s physician can help in finding and adjusting the right dose of DHEA (which should ideally mimic that of a 20 year old’s when taken correctly).
