One look at the boom of Starbuck’s and other coffee purveyors is a telling sign that caffeine is still very much a part of our daily regimen of "get up and go." Indeed, in lieu of pharmaceuticals, coffee and caffeine extracts (like Vivarin) have fueled many a late night study session or put the jump start on an otherwise sluggish morning.

Ironically, numerous tests have shown that while caffeine may give the user a jolt of energy, it doesn’t necessarily improve memory or concentration, and in some cases, impairs it. Add to this the rebound effect of coming down from the stimulant, leaving the user even more tired than before, and you have the makings of what appears to be a very shoddy Smart Drug at best. Tests have also shown that caffeine and alcohol increased inebriation in test subjects. So much for coffee’s legendary "sobering up" effect.

THE DOWNSIDE: Caffeine doesn’t improve memory and can increase inebriation.
