Why is this Happening to Me - Part II

by William Perry, M.A.

Scarcity mentality indicates a basic lack of trust. Ultimate lack of trust concerns our relationship with the Universal Mind, Supreme Intelligence. In religious terms this mind might be called 'God', or 'Heavenly Father'. For some it is the Buddha Mind or the Christ-Consciousness. I prefer the name Divine Creator. Once comfort with a name is reached, then a whole new relationship is called for. This necessity comes about because as dependent children, association is developed.

Infants by nature associate their parents or primary caretakers with Divine Creator. Why, because without a caregiver young life cannot survive. To a child the caregiver reigns supreme. If a parent believes and promotes ideas of scarcity, then their offspring considers Divine Creator lacking. This is why as adults there is often skepticism and lack of faith in a personal God. It all stems from parents, or parental substitutes, doing an inadequate job of providing unconditional love and security. Overcoming this barrier is the first step in building trust in the concept of an unlimited, abundant life.

As spirituality develops within a person there is often the challenge to focus on pantheism or the existence of God in all of nature. Simply put, pantheism sees Creator, God, or Heavenly Father existing in all life. If Divine Creator then exists in all life, it becomes easier to begin developing a concept and realization that God exists in all matter. If God exists in all of nature (everything around us) and God is love then what do we have to fear? If God exists in all matter, which is everywhere and God is love, then matter around us can be viewed upon as good, useful and on our side.

Restoring faith in the creative forces of life, (God and all creation), is no easy task if early childhood is severely influenced by fearful parents. I encourage clients to break all negative associations between parent and Creator. Parents, who live in fear, are dealing with personal low self-esteem. They often unknowingly pass these traits onto their children. As adults we began to realize how much our parents influenced us with traditions of their own childhood culture. These traditions were more often in opposition to spiritual truths. Learning the spiritual truths and knowing how they explain the workings of the Universal Mind is the first step in clearing up misperceptions about the God of Love. Once the spiritual truths are understood it is easier to detect when we are in misalignment with them. Limiting beliefs that would tell us "stop", "be fearful", or show any pessimism are important to recognize in daily conversation with ourselves and others.

Once recognition has occurred, a dress rehearsal of life without fear becomes the perfect substitute. Every time a debilitating thought stops you in your tracks, imagine the opposite scenario. Create a scene in your mind's eye that includes faith in your Creator, as well as yourself. Liken this scene to a time when you have actually accomplished a significant goal. Relive the feelings of victory while the scene is fresh in your mind. Act as if, in your imagination, accomplishment has already taken place. Bring on the confidence, notice the exhilaration in your body, and feel with all your heart the experience of victory. This little exercise will do more to retrain the subconscious mind than all the fretting, consternation, and concern or upset you could possibly create.

Fearful attitudes, along with anger, resentment or intense frustration, are the substitutes for healthy, loving action that would draw us closer to a goal. Parents who display lack mentality often use intimidation and fear to motivate their children. As adults, we see the harm in negative influence; as children we experience only its insidious side effects. Healthy action to change our beliefs as adults includes positive reinforcement of our dreams and goals, liking ourselves enough to deserve victory, and realizing, through spiritual sensitivity, we are not depriving anyone else in the process of attaining our desires.
