Why is this Happening to Me?

by William Perry, M.A.

The most important and adventurous psychological experience we can undertake involves learning to take personal responsibility. From the highest spiritual standpoint, we are given the lesson of this truth throughout our lives. Personal responsibility is a confusing concept for the mind to comprehend. It confuses us because our egos are always looking for exception to this rule. As human beings we're subject to the spiritual laws. The laws remind us of how the universe operates as a whole. When we refrain from understanding, comprehending, and fulfilling one of these laws voluntarily, then we're subject to a reminder from the universe.

"Why is this happening to me?" is a common phrase we hear every day. It indicates one important flaw in our thinking. Anyone who chooses this term forgets where power lies. Power is best accessed when the source is recognized conclusively. I've realized as a counselor and spiritual coach that most people forget the source of power. They prefer to claim the false notion that power lies outside themselves. The easiest indicator to recognize the loss of power comes every time and individual claims, "I can't." A mere utterance of these words indicates a belief in limited negative thinking. All of us are victims of the language we use. Language programs the subconscious and creates debilitating harmful thought patterns.

One of the most important disciplines we can undertake is to daily observe our speech. Noticed the terminology we use. Are we optimistic or pessimistic? Our personalities are created by the circumstances of our life.

Psychology shows us that it is set in place by the age of three. If we have been raised in the company of frightened individuals, and we hear limiting, debilitating thoughts from birth to age three, our personalities will then reflect a scarcity mentality. This simply means that we believe that the common situation for our life will be lack. Consequently, we will have to squabble throughout our life to secure whatever we deem sacred, useful or necessary for the continuation of life. By observing our language, it is very evident to us how we have been programmed. Our job as seekers of higher consciousness is to retrain our reaction to life. This retraining includes the ability to accept, openly and lovingly, all situations within the context of our day.

If you find yourself using words like "It's too risky" or "I don't think I can do that," it is often a convincing sign that your subconscious believes in lack. In this case, it is your lack of ability to succeed in achieving your goals. Notice the urgency in your voice when you are trying to persuade others to do something. It is often an indicator that you are talking to yourself. On some level you realize the need to break through the tapes that have been debilitating your life and stopping acts of courage. If you have been told this convincingly enough as a small child you'll automatically fear new or risky activities. Psychology encourages us to "feel the fear and do it anyway," but the encouragement without getting to the root to of the situation yields little success.

In the future we will explore more of the deep seated inhibiting beliefs that keep us trapped. Hopefully they will help explain more fully "why this is happening to me."
