Sources and Dealing with Anger - Part 1
by William Perry, M.A.
In a recent front page article in USA Today the subject was anger in America. People
of all ages are starting to express rage over the smallest of matters. The article stated that
one of the reasons was because of multiple tasking and our over-stimulation in the world of
information and technology. We are burning ourselves up because there is so much to
choose from and we forget to step away, let the mind relax, renew our bodies and prioritize.
Anger primarily stems from the inability to make healthy useful decisions for our lives.
The first area of indecision concerns the natural expression of emotions. By nature our
emotions must flow naturally and fluidly in order to remain secure and healthy. The article
indicated that Americans are overly steeped in the quest for instant gratification. We have been
taught "we deserve" at the expense of everything around us. To honor an emotional desire and
act in its behalf are two distinct lines of focus. We are all Spirit beings with the gift of emotional
expression. After taking into review a desire that might stem from a strong emotion, we may in
fact rule out acting upon our emotional desire. The cost might simply be too high or the realization
that it is improper timing could enter our minds. Nonetheless we are to honor every emotion and
use it as biofeedback for our lives.
Anger also comes from lack of recognition of purpose. We each have been given in each
unique lifetime the gift of purpose. By remembering it, cultivating our talents, and staying focused
on delivering it, we are optimally serving ourselves and all life around us. An internal backlash
begins to develop when we deny what we came to accomplish in each lifetime. Each of us can
contribute to the whole of life and reduce the internal distress if we but remember our highest
purpose. Strategies such as hypnosis, intuitive guidance from a professional, or just remembering
what you loved to do as a child, can easily reacquaint you with your purpose.
The third source of anger I believe comes from the decision not to trust our deepest feelings.
These true feelings contain messages, intelligence, and information concerning how to act as
loving, sensitive, decisive human beings. These feelings tell us when to take the initiative or when
to slow down. They are foolproof when they come from our heart of hearts which directly takes
guidance from the spirit nature of ourselves and all of life. Our feelings contain clues as well as
out right guidance to help us with every decision of our daily lives.
Our higher selves yearn to work in conjunction with the spirit guides around us. True feelings
are in a different class from commonplace emotional display. Emotion is often ruled by the lower
self and the ego which are sometimes diametrically opposed to spiritual welfare or following our
highest purpose. The emotional life as stated earlier is a great biofeedback mechanism to show
us where we're out of alignment and living contrary to our highest truth. Anger stops when we pay
attention to both, honoring that when we practice discernment and feel our way along, life blossoms.
When we honor our emotions and register the negative ones such as greed, lust, hate, and needless
fear it is easy to see where we are out of spiritual alignment. In short these emotions often show us
what we no longer want to be.
Everyone on the spiritual path can help eliminate negative anger by being a shining example of
one who remembers their purpose, accepts emotional display at face value without judgment or
condemnation , then uses healthy discernment to decide what to do next. Simultaneously we can
honor the gift of true feelings and use their power to pave the way for more peaceful joyous future.
